World War I Hike

Join Outdoor Rec for an adventurous and educational ascent up Monte Vezzena in our local Dolomites. We will hike to visit two World War I forts, covering approximately 14 km (8.5 miles) and 500 meters (1650 feet) of elevation gain. Along the way we will discuss some of the history of the area while enjoying the beautiful natural setting.

The drive time from Vicenza is approximately 1.5 hours to reach our parking destination at Hotel Vezzena. This is a remote location and it is hit or miss if the hotel is open, so we will plan for a coffee/restroom break beforehand in a nearby town. Once we begin the hike there are no formal restroom facilities on hand but plenty of wooded nature.

The trip is an out-and-back, approximately 7 km of steadily uphill to the summit of Monte Vezzena. The ascent normally takes 2-3 hours. Pack a lunch to enjoy at the peak along with the stunning panorama view. After eating and discussing the summit fort, we will begin our 7 km descent back to our vehicle. The descent typically takes 1.5-2 hours to complete, for a total hiking time of 3.5-5 hours.

A note on weather: Outdoor Recreation will review the conditions ahead of time to ensure they are appropriate for the hike. We will not cancel for rain unless it is deemed unsafe for hiking. If it is found that the conditions are not suitable, you will be notified and we will inform you about refund information.
