Spend the day learning about important areas of the Tyrol region! We will travel to Schwaz, Austria, to visit the Schwaz Silver Mine, the largest silver mine in the world. Afterward, we will experience a Tyrolean medieval castle: the Schloss Tratzberg.
The Schwaz Silver Mine, nicknamed "the mother of all mines", is one of the most productive silver mines in history having once employed 10,000 people at once. We will take the mine railway – locally known as the Ratternden hut – deep into the mountain to kick off our 1.5-hour tour of the mine. On the tour, yowe will see the different technologies used by the miners and the working conditions in the mine 500 years ago. This was one of the biggest mining communities in the world – it was the Schwaz mine that made Tyrol one of the richest regions in Europe! After the tour, you will have time to check out the mine gift shop.
We will then head to the Schloss (castle) in Tratzberg, Austria. Perched high on a hilltop, you will see the castle that served as a guard post to defend the Bavarian region. This castle stands as a reminder of European past and reflects the lifestyle of medieval nobility. We will take a guided tour of this magnificent place before heading back to Vicenza.
