Christmas Market: Krampus Festival

Join Outdoor Recreation for an unforgettable trip to see the oldest Krampus-Festival in South Tirol. Enjoy a day in the mountains and visit the Christmas market with a selection of unique, authentic and handmade products for you. The Krampus Festival will start at 6 p.m. in the center and all children will receive a present from Santa. For the younger children that may not want to be frightened by the Krampus, there will be a "Krampus Free Zone."

The Krampus is a devilish, frightening figure who always accompanies Saint Nicholas and is a well known figure throughout the alpine region. The name is derived from the Middle High German word "Krampen" for "claw" or from the Bavarian "Krampn", which means something lifeless, dried up or withered. Today, the Krampus custom has often mixed with Perchten customs. However, while the latter are "at home" during the Rauhnächte at the turn of the year, the Krampus is an inseparable part of Advent customs. In South Tyrol, where such traditions are cultivated with special care, the Krampus are both popular and feared. At the Krampus runs around the St. Nicholas Festival, they appear frequently and spread fear and terror. Nowadays, however, the Krampus are no longer satisfied with the role of the fearsome Santa Claus companion.
