What is the SKIES program?
The SKIES program offers instructional classes for children and youth generally after school and on weekends for school age children/youth, and possibly during school hours for children not in school that are 5 years old and younger.
What kinds of classes are offered by SKIES?
A catalog of courses is provided every quarter with the most current classes offered and is available at the CYS Parent Central Services Office in Ederle Bldg. 108, at the SKIES Office in Ederle Bldg. 308, or online at Webtrac.
Classes offered typically include:
- Private music instruction
- Dance
- Martial arts
- Swimming
- Fine arts
- Gymnastics
- Cooking Classes
- Baking Classes
- Parent and Me Classes
- Various homeschool instructional classes
When does enrollment take place for SKIES programs?
SKIES produces a catalog of programming seasonally for the fall to winter, spring and summer programming. Please check the current catalog or this website to find out the enrollment dates for the classes you are interested in joining.
Some program, such as dance and gymnastics, have sessions that run for the season which have a set enrollment date. The enrollment period for these programs runs throughout the session or until the class is full. Nearing the end of the session, students may be added if it is approved by the instructor.
For music and martial arts programs, youth can enroll anytime as long as space is available. If space isn’t available, your child can be placed on the waiting list for the program and your Family will be contacted as soon as a space in the class becomes available.
Why can’t SKIES offer more classes after 5 p.m. for single or dual working parents for more age groups?
SKIES instructors are contracted to provide programming for our community. The contractors provide us with a schedule of what they are available to teach and when. We do our best to try to meet the demand of the community.
To accommodate various families schedules, SKIES offers private instructional classes as an alternative for those that cannot meet at the scheduled catalog time (based on instructors availability).
Do you have waiting lists for programs?
SKIES offers various waiting lists to provide the opportunity for children and youth to participate if spaces become available. For some programs such as private music lessons, SKIES maintains a waiting list to fill the slots which become available for all the SKIES contracted music instructors. If you are interested in having your child added to a SKIES waiting list for a program, please contact the SKIES office at the number listed above during the operating hours indicated.
Do you have to be registered with CYS to use the SKIES program?
Yes. Children must be registered with CYS Services to use the SKIES or any other CYS programming. Please see the Parent Central Services section for information on getting your children/youth registered with CYS.
Does my child have to be assessed to take swim lessons?
SKIES offers age-based Parent & Me swim classes for children from ages 6 months to 2 years of age. To participate in these classes, Families do not need a swim assessment. Parent participation is required for Parent and Me classes.
SKIES' Little Swimmers program for children ages 3 and 4 do not require a swim assessment.
For children 5 years and older to be enrolled into the SKIES group level classes, an assessment is required to determine which level the child should start at. Please consult the current SKIES catalog for information on days and times when swim assessments take place or contact the SKIES office at the number listed above during the operating hours indicated.
